Homing Beacon
#197 |
The latest Homing Beacon has
arrived and today we talk about Tone Poem MashUps. With these words, Darth Maul
considerably upped the amount of dialog he had in Episode I, but you couldn't
hear them in the movie. You heard a bit of this in the "Duel of the Fates" music
video, but to hear this whole monologue and others voiced by Episode I
characters, you had to catch the "Tone Poem" television spots that aired in
1999. These were made available on starwars.com as well as the Episode I DVD,
and now they're ingredients in the Star Wars MashUp tool found at http://mashup.starwars.com.
You can now pair up monologues from Qui-Gon, Anakin, Shmi, Queen Amidala and
Darth Maul with footage from all six films, video games, and even stuff you've
shot and uploaded yourself. It's fast, easy, and free so try it out today. Your
work may be featured in the starwars.com video player.

Darth Bane: Rule
of Two |
The Official Star Wars Site has a new article about Darth Bane:
Rule of Two! In the New York Times bestseller Darth Bane: Path of
Destruction, Drew Karpyshyn painted a gripping portrait of a young man's
journey from innocence to evil. That man was Darth Bane, a twisted genius whose
iron will, fierce ambition, and strength in the dark side of the Force made him
a natural leader among the Sith -- until his radical embrace of an
all-but-forgotten wisdom drove him to destroy his own order... and create it
anew from the ashes. As the last surviving Sith, Darth Bane promulgated a harsh
new directive: the Rule of Two.
Two there should be; no more, no less. One to embody the power, the other
to crave it.
Now Darth Bane is ready to put his policy into action, and he thinks he has
found the key element that will make his triumph complete: a student to train in
the ways of the dark side. Though she is young, Zannah possesses an instinctive
link to the dark side that rivals his own. With his guidance, she will become
essential in his quest to destroy the Jedi and dominate the galaxy.
There is one who is determined to stop Darth Bane: Johun Othone, Padawan to
Jedi Master Lord Hoth, who died at Bane's hands in the last great Sith War.
Though the rest of the Jedi scoff at him, Johun's belief that there are
surviving Sith on the loose is unshakeable.
As Johun continues his dogged pursuit of the man who killed his master,
Zannah, faced unexpectedly with a figure from her past, begins to question her
embrace of the dark side. And Darth Bane is led by Force-induced visions to a
moon where he will acquire astonishing new knowledge and power -- power that
will alter him in ways he could never have imagined...
Darth Bane: Rule of Two by Drew Karpyshyn is due out this December
from Del Rey Books. It features a cover illustrated by John Van Fleet and
designed by David Stevenson. |

Star Wars
Battlefront: Renegade Squadron - In Stores Now! |
LucasArts has announced that Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade
Squadron, the next installment of the best-selling Star Wars Battlefront series
of videogames, is now available at retail stores in the U.S.
Developed exclusively for the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system by
U.K.-based Rebellion, Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron continues the
immensely successful Battlefront series, which has sold more than 10 million
copies worldwide since its introduction in 2004.
The only new Star Wars Battlefront experience of 2007, Renegade Squadron
delivers a new way for players to experience their favorite Star Wars battles
any way – and anywhere – they want. The game presents new battles and missions
found through a never-before-told story, as well as an unprecedented wealth of
personalization and customization options. And for the first time on the PSP
system, Star Wars Battlefront players can team up or compete online with friends
all over the world.
Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron is the previously untold story of a
ragtag ensemble of battle-hardened rogues and scoundrels assembled by Han Solo.
Gathered to execute some of the most secretive operations in the Rebel
Alliance’s war against the Galactic Empire, the Renegade Squadron participates
in battles spanning the galaxy. From the frozen base on Hoth to a dogfight in
space through the remains of Alderaan, Solo directs the team on missions of
sabotage, rescue and retrieval.
In Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron, robust customization options
replace the class system seen in previous Star Wars Battlefront titles, allowing
for millions of possible unique combatants. With weapons, equipment and
abilities that players select themselves, no two allies will likely ever look or
perform exactly the same.
The game also boasts expanded multiplayer options for the PSP system. Up to
16 players will be able to compete against each other over the Internet and
eight via the PSP system’s ad-hoc wireless connection. |

Battlefront:
Renegade Squadron Q&A Part 3 |
The Official Star Wars Site has another article with LucasArts
Lead Programmer Rich May, Rebellion Animator Mark Bradshaw, Lead Designer Mike
Rosser, Lead Tester Ryan Adza, and Renegade Squadron Blog Master Chris Baker
answer fan questions about Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron. This is
Part 3 of the Q&A.
What were the things that you wanted to put in really bad but
couldn't?
Mike: Good question! Personally, I really wanted to have a third
faction in Galactic Conquest mode, perhaps some Black Sun-esque crime syndicate.
It was vetoed because it was felt, understandably, that it would dilute the
classic 'good versus evil' scenario.
Another feature that was in my original design document was a simplified
version of X-wing's Energy Array system. By pressing a button, you'd be able to
cycle between Balanced, Shield-Biased, Laser-Biased or Engine-Biased
configurations. It was felt that this system was overly complex given that space
combat isn't the focus of the Battlefront franchise, so the feature was dropped,
but I'd still love to have done it.
Rich: We originally intended to have camo-colored 'Jungle Speeders'
(rather than snowspeeders) on Boz Pity. Unfortunately they simply wouldn't fit
in the level after we decided to reduce it in size to improve the gameplay.
Still, as I've previously mentioned, the carrion spats will get you around
pretty well there (same with the T4-B heavy tanks).
And as I've also previously mentioned, we didn't get Pink Vader into the
game, unfortunately.
Mike: Mercifully!
Be sure to read the entire article for all the latest questions and
answers. |

The Essential
Atlas |
The Official Star Wars
Site has announced The Essential Atlas. Fly from one side of the
galaxy to the other and see everything in between with the next installment of
the revamped Essential Guides to Star Wars from Del Rey Books. This is so
much more than a revisit to the first edition Essential Guide to Planets and
Moons. Authors and Star Wars astrogators Jason Fry and Daniel Wallace
have meticulously researched the Star Wars universe of movies, books,
comics and more to create an unparalleled resource for Star Wars
travelers.
Inside Star Wars: The Essential Atlas, learn about the structure of
the galaxy, the astronomical and geopolitical divisions and distinction that
frame this far-away setting. Sections devoted to specific regions in the galaxy
include the Deep Core, the Colonies, Hutt Space, the Outer Rim and more. An
alphabetical collection of planetary profiles details over 70 worlds, while the
historical atlases chart the expansion of galactic exploration, conquest and
conflict from the earliest campaigns of Xim the Despot, to the rise of
Palpatine's Galactic Empire, to the brutal invasion of the Yuuzhan Vong to the
latest conflict between Corellia and Coruscant. An expansive Appendix lists the
galaxy's star systems with notes about sector and regional placement for easy
reference.
Star Wars: The Essential Atlas is due out in June 2008 from Del Rey
Books. |
