Homing Beacon #181

The latest Homing Beacon has arrived and today we get to talk more about Celebration IV. Star Wars Celebration IV is coming to the Los Angeles Convention Center May 24 -- 28, 2007. The five days of Star Wars fun will pivot around May 25, the actual 30th anniversary date of the saga. Fans, stars, entertainers, and media are expected from all over the world to celebrate all the fun that's been, and all that's still to come for the Star Wars galaxy.

Fans should be sure not to miss the 30th Anniversary Opening Ceremonies on Friday evening, May 25. The Ceremonies will be a double celebration, officially kicking off a huge weekend of Star Wars fun, while commemorating the actual 30th anniversary of the first day Star Wars opened in theaters in 1977. Look for entertainment, guest stars, and special surprises designed just for this memorable evening.

The Star Wars movie saga started with rich, original ideas both for story and visual effects from young filmmaker George Lucas. At Star Wars Celebration IV we'll honor the innovative spirit of movie making at the Sixth Annual Star Wars Fan Film Awards. Moviemakers will compete for one of the rare Star Wars Fan Film trophies featuring golden droids C-3PO and R2-D2. The maker of the top movie will have the exceptional honor of receiving the George Lucas Selects trophy, chosen by the moviemaker himself.

Those who enter the Star Wars Fan Film competition and are chosen as finalists will have their movies played at Star Wars Celebration IV in a dedicated track each day of the show. What's more, the best movies of the competition will be recognized at the Fan Film Award Ceremony, scheduled for Sunday, May 27. Always memorable, often full of surprises, the ceremony will honor the top movies of the competition, and feature presenters from the industry, including representatives from Lucasfilm. Stay tuned to www.starwars.com/celebration for updates on where to submit original movies for the competition.

Celebrities from all six movies of the Star Wars saga, as well as from the Star Wars television and video game arenas will be attending Celebration IV to greet fans, take part in panels and question and answer sessions, and many will be signing autographs. Official Pix, the licensed supplier of authentic Star Wars autographs will return, and are expecting to bring an even larger group of celebrity guests for their Celebration Autograph Hall. The company brought 34 guests to Celebration II, and 41 to Celebration III. Lucasfilm and Gen Con LLC have set aside an even larger area to accommodate autographs for Celebration IV.

Star Wars Celebration IV is a party created by Star Wars fans for Star Wars fans, and fans will play a massive role in making the 30th anniversary celebration unforgettable. Just as one example, the R2-D2 Builders, a group of fans who construct their own movie-real models of droids from the Star Wars saga, are planning a spectacular display. The droid builders, who created star attractions and events at both Celebrations II and III, have even greater things in store for fans, including building panels, a parade, and the XXtreme Droid Challenge. The Builders have plans to get fans attending Celebration IV to get into the action, too.

"Fans will have a chance to test their skills as an Astromech operator at the first ever Drive-A-Droid Trivia Challenge in the Fan Fair Hall," says Jason Smith, coordinator for the worldwide R2-D2 Builders at Celebration IV.

Don't miss the Star Wars party of a lifetime! Register for Star Wars Celebration IV at www.starwars.com/celebration.

The Empire Strikes Back-Special Edition - 10th Anniversary

10 years ago yesterday marked the release of The Empire Strikes Back-Special Edition! It was great to be seeing the Star Wars movies all together within a month and a half's time and on the big screen. Waiting in line to be with other fans to see the first show was great! The newly revised movie included new CG effects and locations. We got to see the new Wampa scene, and a longer approach to Cloud City on Bespin which really gave us a feel for the city. It was a great time!

Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor

Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor.jpg (44985 bytes)The Official Star Wars Site announces a new book to be penned by Matthew Stover. The Battle of Mindor is one of the great conflicts of the Galactic Civil War that has yet to be documented in a novel, but best-selling author Matthew Stover is tackling this conflict as the subject matter of his new Star Wars novel.

Due out in February 2008, Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor tells the tale of the Alliance's efforts to stop Lord Shadowspawn and his black-clad legions of shadow stormtroopers shortly after the destruction of the second Death Star. All the classic heroes return -- Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, Lando, Threepio, Artoo and the pilots of Rogue Squadron -- in a thrilling adventure of good versus evil, with the fledgling New Republic battling the stubborn remains of a splintering Galactic Empire.

Matthew Stover is best-known for his acclaimed novelization of Revenge of the Sith, and his psychologically charged and challenging Star Wars novels Traitor and Shatterpoint. Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor is due out in hardcover in February 2008 from Del Rey Books.

Featured Artist Craig Burt-Painting by Numbers 22

Featured Artist Craig Burt has provided us with a breakdown of one of his paintings that provides us with a look into how the picture came about. Here is some of the article created by Craig:

2Jango's Tango progression.jpg (181434 bytes)
"Jango's Tango"

This painting is an early interpretation of the fight scene between Jango Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi, in the rain on Kamino, from Attack of the Clones.

1. Here you can see the start of the idea for the painting with a couple of differently oriented poses. You can see that the second of these is influenced by the stills from the movie trailers. I wasn't too happy with the way they worked so I went looking for photo reference to work from.

Be sure to read the rest of the article about "Jango's Tango" in the Painting by Numbers section. Thanks Craig for another great walkthrough of how this image came about! Enjoy!

The Making of Star Wars

The Making of Star Wars.jpg (36421 bytes)The Official Star Wars Site announces The Making of Star Wars. Well, it has been nearly 30 years in coming, but we are finally going to get a book entitled The Making of Star Wars that is way overdue. There was almost a "Making of" book way back when, but for one reason or another it never came to fruition. Lucasfilm Executive Editor Jonathan Rinzler has resurrected the idea and has taken all of the old files and interviews originally compiled for the book to produce The Making of Star Wars for the 30th anniversary.

Look for The Making of Star Wars in book stores this April, which will be offered in a 324-page trade paperback edition ($35) and a 372-page deluxe hardcover with stamped George Lucas signature on the cover ($75). There is a very interesting article explaining more that you will want to read.

No Force Unleashed For PC??

Right now the only gaming platforms that have been announced to be able to play the upcoming Star Wars game called The Force Unleashed is the PS2, PSP, and Nintendo DS. What?? No PC?? This is only going to be the biggest game of the year and a large part of the gaming market is currently being left out. However, there is a petition that will be sent to LucasArts to try and pursued them to produce a PC version. If you want to support the PC version, then go sign the petition.
