SW:
Galaxies Simplified |
The developers of Star Wars: Galaxies have decided to
simplify the game by making it more combat-oriented, limiting the
number of classes you can choose from, and cutting back on lots of
the dialouge/reading:
It makes sense to offer players the chance to assume the role of
familiar types from the films but having a universe where there
are hundreds of Luke Skywalkers and Han Solos is pretty much the
antithesis of roleplaying. Add in the preset ability advancement
and there's even less to separate you from the other players in
the game. Excluding racial or equipment bonuses, all similar
character types of a similar level are going to have the same
abilities. While it makes advancement idiot-proof, it also keeps
you from feeling like you have any say in how your character
grows.
IGN then goes on to say that players can pick Jedi
as their starting profession:
Unfortunately, players can now choose Jedi as a starting
profession. While this is the ultimate in wish fulfillment for
most Star Wars fans, the scarcity of Jedi is so fundamental to
the time period represented in the game that it seems to
completely undercut the developers' claims that their main goal
is "to make the game more like Star Wars." With Jedi
flashing their sabers nearly everywhere you turn, the mystique
and magic of the profession are completely gone. Perhaps worst
of all, opening up the Jedi profession for all players is a huge
"screw you" to the players who bothered to put forth
the time and effort required to unlock the secret of playing
Jedis under the old system.
I think you'll want to head over to IGN and read
the full
review.

Star
Wars Helmets Auctioned |
Two Stormtrooper helmets, used for the desert scenes in A New
Hope, were auctioned off today for approximately $44,000:
They were in slightly different conditions and one sold for £19,200
with another fetching £18,000 at the auction at Christie's in
south Kensington, central London.
Both items from the 1977 film had been estimated
to fetch £8,000 to £10,000, so they nearly doubled their
value.

Star
Wars Pirate Pleads Guilty |
Marc Hoaglin, the hero who put Revenge of the Sith up for
download the night before it's theatrical release, pleaded guilty
to uploading a copyrighted work being prepared for commercial
distribution -- a violation of a law enacted this year that makes
such conduct a federal felony.
DailyBreeze.com
writes:
Hoaglin was one of eight people allegedly
involved in passing along the stolen copy of the film that he
acknowledges in his plea agreement he posted on a Web site.
According to prosecutors, the source of the
pirated copy was a post-production facility where a worker took
home a copy.
While Hoaglin was charged with a felony, the
other defendants in the case were charged with a misdemeanor
charge of willfully infringing on a copyright.

Hearing
is Believing: Behind the Episode III Soundtrack |
The Official Site posted a fantastic article explaining how they
made the sounds for Episode III. While Ben Burtt is the expert at
mixing and manipulating sounds, it is Michael Wood's job to read
through the script to decide which raw sound footage Burtt may
need him to capture to add to the mix. Here's a brief excerpt:
"All the prequels called for many new recordings,"
Wood reveals. "When embarking on a Star Wars film, I get
the list of needs from Ben Burtt. Vehicles, pass-bys, and
animals are the main hit list. We have so many new creatures and
vehicles in each film that these are the most important."
Suited up with a digital recorder, microphone
and headphones, Wood captures the needed sounds from various
angles and then returns to the studio to catalog all
newly-recorded sounds with keywords. The files are then placed
in a database accessible to Burtt -- who will use them at his
discretion along with his vast library of sounds to create the
new sound effects.
"We make several thousand new sounds for
every Star Wars film," Wood adds. "The combination of
the sound design recordings, the designed composites and the new
Foley make up the bulk of this. Everything is categorized, named
and listed in the database for searchable access. Every single
sound passes through approval by Ben [Burtt]. Then the scenes
get auditioned by George [Lucas] and mixed in with the music
during the final mix."
