Erik Tiemens at FilmCon 5

FilmCon, the Madison, Wisconsin based Sci-Fi / movie convention is proud to announce that it's first guest of honor for its fifth convention is Lucasfilms, Erik Tiemens.

Here is a brief description of the artist and what he has done:

Erik Tiemens came to Episode II after initial production had already wrapped to provide the post-production teams with dramatic environmental illustrations to establish look and mood for such dynamic sequences as the droid factory and the start of the Clone Wars.

With his powerful work, Tiemens has continued straight on into Episode III. Together with Ryan Church, Tiemens leads the environmental and industrial design efforts for the film as Concept Design Supervisor.

Inspired by Star Wars and classic movies in his youth, Tiemens studied traditional drawing and painting at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, graduating with distinction in 1990.

"I developed a deeper appreciation for the arts there, especially 19th century painting. The learning there has brought references into my film work. In the digital medium where we need to invent new things, like environments, it's always nice to create a link to the visual past. I believe if we're only looking at what's been done in the past few years or so, it gets tiring to the audience. To look back on the layers of history, early photography, sculpture, painting and the arts in general gives us a more rewarding experience."

Tiemens started in the movie industry as a concept artist. He has worked on films, theme park designs, and television shows, while continuing to paint traditional landscapes and figurative works. He was later recommended by concept artist Iain McCaig from work the two did on an ILM project.

Tiemens' previous experiences included such films as Forrest Gump, Jurassic Park, Contact and Star Wars: Special Edition Honors for Tiemens include an Honorary Emmy for matte painting on The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles television series and an Emmy nomination for designing the opening of Star Trek Voyager series. He was also featured in the books The Art of Star Wars -- Special Edition, The Art of Star Wars: Attack of the Clones and The Art of Star Trek. Lecture series given at 'ILM', Early photography & 19th Century painting and its potential influence on computer imagery.

At FilmCon...

Erik will be speaking twice, once on Saturday and then on Sunday. The plan so far is to first let him talk about himself, his work in film, and everything related to it. This is where he will be showing art from the Star Wars saga, and answering questions about it like....What where some ideas for the early stories?, What other types of planets did you have to create, that where not shown in the films?. ( This truly is a rare chance to talk to someone who was there from the beginning ) Then Sunday in a very rare demonstration, Erik will actually paint live as he does at the ranch! Showing step by step how he creates those great paintings for George and his team.

At C3, Erik and other artists had a line of over 200 people waiting for autographs in the fan lounge. Well, at FilmCon autographs will be free, but limited to 2. For anymore we ask you make a contribution to the charity. More information will arrive soon, so watch for further email and the website. It is being updated today. FilmCon is excited to have Erik Tiemens as our guest this year, and we know you will be meeting him.

*Also, tickets go up in price on the 20th, as long as they are postmarked by then we will accept them for the lower membership rates.

Star Wars Battle Front II for PSP

From IGN.com
quote:

Star Wars Battlefront II for PSP is similar to its recently announced console counterpart with space combat, playable Jedi, and Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith content, yet it still boasts several distinct features meant to embrace the "on-the-go" nature of a handheld system. The game includes several unique mini-campaigns as opposed to the much longer campaign seen on consoles. Players can join the Rebellion as a smuggler, work for themselves as a mercenary for hire, or use their Imperial sniping skills to rid the galaxy of pesky species like Jawas, Ewoks and Gungans. Wi-Fi compatibility permits up to four players to join in at once, either cooperatively or competitively, and they can also partake in classic Instant Action mode to fight their favorite Star Wars battles any way they want to.

SWBF2 for PSP can't be bad at all. Ever since I played the demo of SWB from Playstation Magazine(only bought it cause it had demos), I just loved the game. Anywho, more news I guess to report later.

Complete Locations

Fans who attended Comic-Con International were given a glimpse at some of the exciting reference books and guides coming from LucasBooks later this year. For its meticulous detail and exhaustively researched explorations of the far-away galaxy, one book that definitely opened eyes is DK Publishing's Star Wars: The Complete Locations.

This book takes you inside the worlds of the complete Star Wars saga, compiling the individual books already produced for Episodes I, II and the Star Wars Trilogy, updating the text and filling it out with all new Episode III material. Track the twisting space battle high over Coruscant. Go inside one of the massive tree cities of Kashyyyk. See the inner reaches of the enormous Jedi Temple. Follow the flow of lava and the buzz of lightsabers through the heat-blasted industrial facilities of Mustafar and much more.

The entire saga is now open to this in-depth exploration: the Podrace hangars of Mos Espa, the Kaminoan stilt cities, the dark alcoves of the Mos Eisley Cantina, the snowy battlefields of Hoth and the precipitous tower that houses the Emperor's throne room on the second Death Star, and more...

This hardcover book features amazing cutaway illustrations by Richard Chasemore and Hans Jenssen. The text is by Kristin Lund, Simon Beecroft, James Luceno and new Episode III material by Kerrie Dougherty. It is due out in October from DK Books.

Dark Nest Trilogy, The Swarm War

First revealed at Comic-Con International, here is the cover to The Swarm War, the final book of the Dark Nest trilogy. In this explosive conclusion, Luke Skywalker summons the heroes of the New Jedi Order from near and far as the Star Wars galaxy teeters on the edge of eternal war. Yet even the combined powers of the formidable Jedi may not be enough to vanquish the deadly perils confronting them.

The Chiss-Killik border war is threatening to engulf the entire galaxy -- raising the awful specter of the Killik sweeping across space to absorb all living creatures into a single hive mind. The only hope for peace lies with the Jedi -- who must not only end the bloodshed between two fierce enemies but also combat the insidious evil spread by the elusive Dark Nest and its unseen queen.

Leia's Jedi skills will be put to the ultimate test in the coming life-and-death battle. As for Luke, he will have to prove, in a lightning display of Force strength and swordplay, that he is -- beyond a shadow of a doubt -- the greatest Jedi Master in the galaxy.

The first novel is already available, with the second comming out in October, and this third in December.

The Star Wars Holiday Special

Today we have added The Star Wars Holiday Special to the Movies Section. The Star Wars Holiday Special aired on CBS during the Christmas Holiday season in 1978 and was the only time it was ever shown. It features Chewie and Han trying to get back to Kashyyyk for a celebration called Life Day. Many of the main characters from Star Wars were in it, but one of the most significant events was the introduction of Boba Fett in a cartoon that Chewie's son is watching.

It was bad. I mean really bad. The Ewok stories are bad also, but they look like blockbusters in comparison. I have provided a small version of the entire show for you to see. It is not a good copy and will run for about 1 hour and 35 minutes. It is small for easy downloading and is about 2 inches squared. You will at least be able to see what all the hype is about. If you dare, go for it. Don't say I didn't warn you though. This file requires the Real Player program which can be found here and is 17.6 MB. Enjoy!
