What is the difference between bluescreen and greenscreen?

This report comes from the Official Star Wars Site!

Answered by: ILM Visual Effects

The decision to shoot greenscreen vs. bluescreen is usually based on the colors of subject matter that are to be photographed and extracted from the screen. Subjects that contain lots of blue usually are photographed against a greenscreen, and vice versa. The original photochemical technique used bluescreen and is referred to as "The Color Difference Traveling Matte System" in The American Cinematographer Manual. Green screen photography is a newer system, originally devised for video chroma key matting, and interestingly not even referenced in this manual. There are widely differing opinions regarding which technique is superior.
