INT. ANAKIN'S HOVEL - DAY

Anakin stares at his mother's lifless body, tears falling.

ANAKIN
It's my fault, my selfishness, my greed. That's why she died.

Obi-Wan lays a comforting hand on his Padawan

OBI-WAN KENOBI
There's nothing you could have done. The Emperor had orders .
sent out to kill any suspected traitor.

Anakin pushes away from his master.

ANAKIN
That's not true, if it wasn't for me the Emperor would have never
sent his troops here. It's because of me, because of me.

Obi-Wan throws a blanket over the lifeless body of Shmi Skywalker. Anakin
kneels in the hovel that is so much smaller that he remembered it.

ANAKIN
I left her here. I left her here to live as a slave, while I was free.

OBI-WAN KENOBI
It was the way of the Force Anakin, you could not control your destiny.

Anakin gets up, grabbing Obi-Wan.

ANAKIN
Was it my destiny to let my mother die? Was it my destiny to not
care about anyone else but myself.

OBI-WAN KENOBI
Becareful Anakin, do not let your anger turn to hate. That's what the Emperor wants.
(beat)
You have Amidala, and soon, children of your own. Don't give in to
these feelings. The Dark Side comes as a thief in the night, riding
on your emotions. You must control them.

Anakin bows his head, wiping his eyes. R2 beeps outside of the hovel.

OBI-WAN KENOBI
Come Anakin, say your farwells and let us be going. I fear the Sith
know we are here and they will stop at nothing until all the Jedi are
gone.
(beat)
Your mother would have wanted you to fight.

Obi-Wan looks to the blanket covering Shmi.

OBI-WAN KENOBI
She was a good woman, she will live on in you, never forget that.
The Force was strong in her, as it is in you, as it will be in your
children.
(beat)
Darkness falls, and so, I fear our future. Come young Padawan.

Obi-Wan pats Anakin's shoulder, leaving the hovel. Anakin looks around the
hovel. A tear falls from his face. He looks to where his mother's body lies.

ANAKIN
I will avenge your death.

Anakin turns around, leaving the house of his youth. Strangely, the blanket
that lies on his mother;s body sinks in, Shmi's body disappearing. A light
then shines, the SPIRIT of Shmi appears, watching her son as he leaves the
hovel.
