Photo-Realistic Digital Actors!

Hollywood is "able to create sets and environments that most audiences have never had an opportunity to witness firsthand," says ILM chief Jim Morris.

Episode 2, expected in 2002, is being shot in Australia entirely on digital cameras, and all post-production work will take place on ILM computers and create more than 2,000 special-effects shots.

But, says Morris, "the most compelling direction for the future is creating digital humans that can take part in certain roles, whether it be a historical figure or an actor who is no longer alive."

That day is closer than you might think. Next July's Final Fantasy, a film based on popular video games, will use a cast of nearly photo-realistic digital actors.

"I don't think a success of a film is reliant on the special effects," says ILM's Morris. "Effects and animation are a tool for the filmmaker to use, not an end in themselves. We've seen what happens when you use them that way," Morris says.

To read more about this story head over to USA Today .  Maybe this will mean that we might see characters like Grand Moff Tarkin in the prequels that are no longer alive.  That would bring great continuity to the film series, dont you think?
