Darth Plagueis Book Coming |
The Official Star Wars Site has announced that a Darth Plagueis book is coming! Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise? I thought not. It's not a story the Jedi would tell you. It's a Sith legend. -- Chancellor Palpatine (a.k.a Darth Sidious).
With that carefully calculated name-drop in Episode III, the silver-tongued Palpatine added another intriguing entry into the limited roster of known Dark Lords of the Sith. Since that fascinating tale first escaped his lips last year, Star Wars fans have been aching for any sort of information that would shed light on the immediate Sith history that produced Darth Sidious.
In 2008, readers will learn more. James Luceno, author of the bestselling Cloak of Deception and Darth Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader, has been contracted by Del Rey Books to write a novel about Darth Sidious and his Muun mentor, Darth Plagueis. As is to be expected on all matters of the Sith, details remain obscured by the shadow of the dark side, but in time, more will be revealed.
Luceno's as yet untitled book is scheduled for hardcover release in 2008.

Homing Beacon #163 |
The latest Homing Beacon has arrived and today we get to talk about the novel Betrayal and blogging. Last week's release of the hardcover novel Betrayal kicked off the start of Legacy of the Force, a nine-book series published by Del Rey Books. Eager fans of Star Wars expanded universe literature dove into this new era of adventure, set 40 years after the events of A New Hope. Those Hyperspace members that tore through the book the quickest began posting their thoughts on blogs.starwars.com. Here's a sample:
"It's like reading something out of the classics--it just can't go wrong. And this one didn't. Not even a bit. I was worried, though, when Vergere was mentioned and those weird 'shades of gray' implications of the Force started rising to the surface (didn't we already go over this?), but I got over it. Jacen's decision turned out to be much, much more interesting and in the end, more of an ambiguity (... I can't decide who I believe!) that should prove to be fruitful no matter which direction he ultimately goes. Trust me when I say I'll be following his career as a yo-yo of anticipation. I just can't believe everyone's all grown up..." -- Mara Jade ©
"Allston has written quite the page-turner. I had an extremely hard time putting it down. The most interesting thing about this book, though, is that the book could also be considered a prologue to Dark Horse Comics' upcoming Legacy series, set 100 years afterward. To quote Yoda, 'Always in motion is the future.' But, I believe that at least one of the discussions that characters have in this book definitely foreshadows and telegraphs events in that upcoming comic." -- Jedivan2
"It definitely felt like the beginning of something big. The story was interesting; the characters were perplexing and very human (both good things); and the events seemed important. I'm very glad I hopped on board Legacy right now, rather than waiting to finish all the other books first." -- rj_peters
"Comparisons with [Episode III] can be found throughout the novel, though most notably in its final, dark, epic chapters. As with RotS, Betrayal opens with something a little lighter: a Jedi mission, in which we find both Jedi action drawing on the tone of the prequels, and some classic Allston humor ... But, drama is here in spades, too, with so many action sequences I've lost count." -- Borma Feng
Perhaps the most noteworthy post came from the author of the book, Aaron Allston. He is the newest VIP member of the blogs.starwars.com community. In his first blog, he discusses the use of humor in storytelling, and how the label "comedy" is often misapplied:
"Humor, again as I define it, operates under different laws. Sure, humor is about laughter, but I consider it to derive from the situation rather than to define the situation... Here's an example not related to my work. In Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones fights through obstacle after obstacle to rescue Marion. Being confronted with one last, huge, sword-wielding opponent, he casually shoots the man dead. This is funny... but it's not comedy. It's a moment bookended by action and death. It elicits a laugh, yes, but the moment obeys realistic rules, doesn't impose comedic rules, and doesn't alter the tension of Indy's situation." -- Allston |

A wild amusement park ride. My first impulse was to get in line and go again" Chicago Daily Herald
Canadian actor Charles Ross spent much of his childhood in a galaxy far, far away, watching Star Wars videos over - and over - and over again. The result of this misspent youth is his hilarious show, One-Man Star Wars Trilogy, where he single-handedly plays all the characters, sings the music, flies the ships, fights the battles and condenses the plots into just sixty minutes.
Since its debut in Toronto, Canada, in January 2001, One-Man Star Wars Trilogy, written by Ross and directed by TJ Dawe, has toured Canada and the USA, including an off-Broadway run, to huge acclaim. Ross has appeared on a number of prestigious American TV shows, including The Today Show and Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and Star Wars creator George Lucas loved the show so much, they not only hired him to promote Star Wars: Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith but also to appear at the official Star Wars Convention, Celebration III.
Charles Ross is making his UK at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, so whether you're a committed Star Wars fan or simply want to enjoy a fast-paced, side-splitting evening that's out of this world, make sure you book your tickets early. Following the Edinburgh Fringe One-Man Star Wars Trilogy will tour U.K.
