The Scythe-class Main Battle Cruiser was the main capital ship of the Galactic Alliance as early as 127 years after the Battle of Yavin. This warship saw service by the Galactic Alliance Forces as late as 100 years after the Yuuzhan Vong War.

Known as the "cross of fire" to many Imperial starship captains, this ship design was created by the Galactic Alliance during the years leading up to the Sith-Imperial War. Although only about a third the size of a Star Destroyer, the Scythe-class Battle Cruiser was much faster and more maneuverable. The ship earned its nickname from its distinctive shape.

The main fuselage was a flat lozenge shaped unit, while the front of the vessel was dominated by a vertical section that was as tall as the main fuselage was long. This blade-shaped section was lined with torpedo tubes, turbolaser cannons, and and starfighter launch bays along its front edge, adding further meaning to the term "cross of fire".

It was approximately one third the size of a Star Destroyer. Because of their size and speed, a group of Scythe-class Battle Cruisers was more than a match for an Imperial Star Destroyer and also capable of engaging a Pellaeon-class Star Destroyer in combat. With the large blade-like structure up front, the Scythe-class resembled the ancient Republic Hammerhead-class cruiser.

Alliance fleet doctrine had moved away from focusing on a few heavy warships to having many smaller vessels in the century following the end of the Yuuzhan Vong invasion. Dreadnoughts like the Viscount-class were no longer the backbone of the Galactic Alliance Defense Fleet, passing that honor to smaller, compact battle cruisers like the Scythe-class.

These warships were part of the Alliance fleet that was defeated by Grand Admiral Morlish Veed prior to the capture of Coruscant by allied Sith/Imperial forces during the Battle of Caamas. A similar, three-pronged warship was also seen during this battle. Whether it was a variant design or a modified Scythe is not known.

One such Scythe-class Battle Cruiser was the Indomitable serving the Galactic Alliance 130 years after the Battle of Yavin.

It was the flagship of Admiral Gar Stazi and part of the Galactic Alliance Core Fleet. It was originally the flagship of Stazi's Galactic Alliance Core Fleet. But after the Battle of Caamas, during which the Galactic Alliance was defeated by the Empire, it became the flagship of the Galactic Alliance Remnant

After seven years of attacks on Darth Krayt's Sith Empire, the Indomitable was last used at the Battle of Mon Calamari. After being outmaneuvered by Stazi, Admiral Dru Valan ordered his battered fleet to destroy the Indomitable at all costs.

Stazi ordered the ship to be evacuated so he could ram it into the Mon Calamari Shipyards. After being knocked out by Rogue Leader Jhoram Bey, the ship's captain and Stazi's second-in-command, Jaius Yorub piloted the ship into the shipyards. He was killed in the attack, but managed to destroy a third of the shipyards while damaging another quarter.

It was later replaced as flagship by the Advanced Star Destroyer Alliance.
