The Tarkin was an immense weapons platform that was developed above the planet Hockaleg in the Patriim System by the Empire in the wake of the destruction of the first Death Star. It combined the Death Star's offensive weaponry and ionic cannons with a new set of engines and defensive shield generators. Based on the ionic cannon which was the primary weapon of the Death Star, the Tarkin was a more mobile starship that greatly reduced the amount of support personnel needed to operate the original Death Star. The designers also upgraded the ship's exhaust systems, eliminating the weakness of the Death Star. Because of it's smaller design and narrow focus, the Tarkin requires a support fleet of Star Destroyers and other picket vessels to protect it, making a large scale frontal assault all but impossible.

The Tarkin's main fuselage was based on the design of the Super-class Star Destroyer, but on a scale comparable to that of the Death Star. A team of Alliance agents, including Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Chewbacca, R2-D2, and C-3PO managed to infiltrate the superweapon and tried to destroy the station, but were intercepted by Darth Vader while on board. Luke battled Vader while Chewie and the droids disabled the weapon's tractor beams. They did manage to destroy a main power generator, as well as reversing the polarization of its fire control mechanism. As the Alliance team fled the station, the Imperials tried to fire on them with the Tarkin's untested weapons. When Colonel Nord tried to fire the ionic cannon, the Tarkin fired inward on itself and exploded, killing all aboard and tearing itself apart. The Tarkin was destroyed.
